Save A Horse Australia Horse Rescue and Sanctuary was established by Amanda Vella to take in unwanted, neglected, abused and slaughter bound horses, rehabilitating them and finding them the perfect forever home. All rescued or surrendered horses are taken to one of two specific rehabilitation centres based either in Gilston or Allanview QLD. Both centres have full care facilities, on call veterinarians and volunteers dedicating their time to caring for all horses around the clock.

Amanda Vella has been rescuing horses for over a decade and has rehabilitated near 400 horses, but horse rescue isn’t all that she does. Amanda is involved in the RSPCA and The Coalition for The Protection of Racehorses in Australia’s campaign to have jumps racing banned in Australia. She is also heading a campaign in Western Australia fighting the Governments approval of horse meat to be sold in Australia for human consumption. Amanda also has a number of other campaigns in the pipeline including bringing in stricter breeding regulations and fighting to have changes made to the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001.

If you are looking to adopt a horse or pony, or have a horse or pony in need of some help contact Amanda Vella.

Lorelle Ackland runs a business on The Gold Coast where she retrains racehorses that for one reason or another have been retired from the track. These wonderful horses often come with a whole host of problems to overcome and it is Lorelle’s aim to provide them with the training they need to become suitable as riding horses.

Lorelle picks up ‘I specialise in ex racehorses only, so I'm not a typical horse rescue business in that sense, I don't go to the doggers and things like that. I have sources who put me on to trainers with horses etc.  I do rehabilitation, as you know most ex racehorses need some kind of rehab due to the lives they have led previously. I train, mostly in dressage but I would like to train my current mare over fences once she is going, I have experience in both and I suppose all aspects of training young horses! I also do lessons and train client horses as well!

My focus is on the horses, they are why I do this and why I will keep doing it! I make no money, I lose a lot of money! But I will not sell or give a horse away to just anybody, my buyers are chosen carefully and I follow up on all of my horses to ensure they are happy’

HOW YOU CAN HELP

The S. A. H. A. Horse Rescue and Sanctuary is always in need of resources. Your donation would be gratefully accepted.

Save A horse Australia has been endorsed by the ATO and has been approved to offer tax deductible receipts for any donation over $2. There are a few ways that you can help:

1. If you would like to make a one off donation please deposit money into our account using only your surname as the reference. Once you have done this, email us with your name and address and at the end of the month we will send you a receipt for your donation.

2. Cash flow is something that we need most when rescuing horses. There are always a lot of ongoing expenses including feed, vet, farrier, dentist cost etc. If you are in a position to offer us an ongoing weekly donation please consider setting up a direct debit each week into our account. Once again using only your surname as the reference. Email us your name and address and at the end of the month you will get a month receipt. Every little bits helps.
